This project aims to explore and understand the dynamics of roommate experiences among individuals aged 18-40 in the city of Chicago. Through a comprehensive survey, the goal is to gather data on common pitfalls and challenges encountered in shared living spaces. The primary aim is to accumulate insights that will inform the development of an innovative roommate-matching application, with the intention to scale its use to any city.


In developing the survey, a comprehensive approach aimed to secure a representative sample through diverse channel distribution. The subsequent analysis integrated quantitative data for statistical insights and qualitative data to unveil the narratives behind participant experiences. A critical aspect was ensuring respondent anonymity, fostering a space for candid sharing. Throughout the study, ethical considerations were prioritized, with a commitment to upholding rigorous standards in data collection, ensuring participant privacy, and securing informed consent at each research stage.


The initial survey focuses on the complex dynamics of roommate experiences for those aged 18-40. Using a scale system (0-5), rankings (1-12), yes/no queries, and narrative prompts, the survey comprehensively explores various aspects of the roommate experience.

The scale gauges experience intensity, rankings prioritize, yes/no offers clarity, and narratives provide in-depth insights. This diverse methodology ensures a thorough examination of roommate challenges, informing the development of effective and efficient solutions for finding a match.


Information on age and gender was collected to test against any significant correlations. While there were not any major differences in responses based on age or gender, it is important to include age in the data presentation for purposes of the project.



Through an examination of scale responses, ranking patterns, and open-ended prompts, insights are gained into the pain points and expectations of individuals surveyed. By utilizing a mix of quantitative metrics and qualitative narratives, our study is now able to shape the foundation of "The Roommate App." The outcome offers a nuanced understanding that has potential to foster meaningful and harmonious cohabitation experiences.



In the case study, open-ended responses were transformed into word clouds, visually highlighting prevalent roommate issues. This dynamic representation allowed for a swift grasp of common themes, turning qualitative insights into easily digestible visuals. By discerning recurring patterns, a nuanced understanding of diverse roommate challenges emerged. These word clouds played a crucial role in shaping strategies for a more effective, user-centric roommate-matching solution.



To refine The Roommate App, the next phase involves dissecting survey insights for a nuanced matching system. This upgrade aims to fine-tune the roommate selection process, integrating key survey factors into the app's matching algorithm and streamlining the user experience. Compatibility scores, presented visually, will offer users an intuitive understanding, complemented by an interactive chat feature to facilitate communication.

A suggested addition is a personality quiz tailored to roommate qualities, elevating the matching process. Alongside, in-app resources will educate users on common roommate challenges and effective cohabitation strategies. Pilot testing with a diverse user group will gather feedback for iterative improvements. Marketing initiatives will include collaborations for broader visibility, ensuring accessibility is at the forefront of the platform's design.

Establishing feedback mechanisms is vital, ensuring continuous improvements to transform The Roommate App into a sophisticated, user-friendly, and inclusive platform. This strategic roadmap aligns with fostering harmonious living arrangements for individuals in Chicago and beyond.
